Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are an important part of the kitchen. After all, this is where you get to put all of your appliances, dishes and everything else that you need to store away. Having functional, good-looking cabinets are what you want in your kitchen, but it could cost you.

Let me explain the different type of kitchen cabinets you can get, along with installation cost and alternatives to buying new cabinets. I’ll also explain how you can save some money on kitchen cabinets.

Types of Cabinets

There are a number of different materials you can get for your cabinets, from particle board and veneer to hardwood. The choice is up to you but can be a significant difference in price for both the cabinets and installation.

It is important to make sure you choose the right material for the cabinets. Particle board material will look nice but may absorb water and tend to work overtime. However, hardwood cabinets are very durable, but very expensive and can also lead to working and the cost can be much different between the two.

How Does Your Kitchen Fit?

Depending on your style and how the rest of your home looks, you may want to decide on  kitchen cabinets that will match the style to the rest of your home. For example, if your style is more minimalist, you may want to opt for cabinets which are more modern.

Trends…. Do You Need To Follow Them?

Trends come and go. If you need to replace your cabinets as they are more than outdated, do not make the mistake of going after a trend, unless you are remodeling to sell your home. As new trends come and go, you may look back in a couple years after getting new cabinets and see the trend has gone leaving your kitchen cabinets outdated yet again.

Instead, you might want to consider getting cabinets which have a good material, nice door styles and a great finish that meet your sense of style in the home and are functional, yet look great in your kitchen.

Kitchen Cabinet Cost

I briefly talked about kitchen cabinets and how they fit into your style. Now, let’s talk about how much different cabinet materials cost.

Particleboard

There are a number of different materials you can get for your kitchen cabinets. The most  inexpensive material is particleboard. On average, these cabinets tend to run around $2,000. They are easy to install and low maintenance.

Wood Veneer

Wood veneer cabinets are more durable than particleboard. They are less prone to water damage as well. However, prolonged exposure can still damage the veneer and the cabinet overall. You can expect to pay between $5000 to $7000 on average.

Laminate

Laminate cabinets offer a nice sleek design, but can easily crack and chip and tend to do so overtime. The average cost for laminate cabinets are around $6,000 to $7,000.

Thermofoil

This type of cabinet looks like wood, but at a lower cost. The cabinets generally cost around $6,000 to $7,000. They are durable cabinets but can peel or blister if too much heat is applied to them..

Hardwood

Hardwood cabinets are very durable and tend to be easy to repair. The downside is that they are expensive and heavy. They can also Warp like any other wood. The cost for hardwood cabinets can range anywhere between $6,000 and $20,000 or higher.

Installation Cost

I’ve explained the different types of cabinets you can get from veneer to hardwood, but what does it cost to install them?

Installation costs can range from zero if you do it yourself to $1,000 or more depending on who does the installation. Installers will generally charge $50 per linear foot for new cabinets, but may charge more depending on if they have to remove old ones as well.

Alternatives to Purchasing New

You may be able to save a decent amount of money if your current cabinets are in good condition. As long as they are in good condition you may be able to get your cabinets refinished or refaced. Refinishing your cabinets can make your old cabinets look new and save a decent amount of money at the same time.

Money Saving Tips

  • As mentioned, refinishing your cabinets instead of buying new ones can save on cost.you can get a slew of different colors and stains to meet your  once and make your cabinets look like new.
  • Do it yourself. Installing cabinets yourself can save a considerable amount of money. Installing cabinets is generally not that difficult but will require a few tools and more than one person.
